Facts About Brain Injury

What is Brain Injury?

Brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. Brain injury can result when the head suddenly and violently hits an object, or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue. Symptoms of brain injury can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. A person with a mild brain injury may remain conscious or may experience a loss of consciousness for a few seconds or minutes. Other symptoms of mild brain injury include headache, confusion, lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, bad taste in the mouth, fatigue or lethargy, a change in sleep patterns, behavioral or mood changes, and trouble with memory, concentration, attention, or thinking. A person with a moderate or severe brain injury may show these same symptoms, but may also have a headache that gets worse or does not go away, repeated vomiting or nausea, convulsions or seizures, an inability to awaken from sleep, dilation of one or both pupils, slurred speech, weakness or numbness in the extremities, loss of coordination, and increased confusion, restlessness, or agitation.

Children tend to be at greatest risk for brain injury. Among children ages 0 to 14 years brain injury results in an estimated 2,685 deaths, 37,000 hospitalizations and 435,000 emergency room visits. Concussions account for approximately 75% of brain injuries each year. Each year in the U.S about 300,000 sports related brain injuries occur.

If you or someone you know have suffered a brain injury through the fault or negligence of another, brain injury attorneys can help you recover damages from whoever was responsible for your brain injury.
